Bethany Bing has been involved with Live Arts Theatre for about a year and a half, both on and off stage. She has stage managed, managed front of house, sold tickets, and has been in several productions. Bethany has a B.A. in Theatre from Covenant College (2016), volunteered with Alliance Theatre and Chattanooga Theatre Centre. Bethany has had Almost a decade in professional theatre training, solid fine arts education, and intends on pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre with a focus in directing. Her ultimate goal is to “do a Becca” and be the artistic director of a theatre someday.
- In Live Arts Theatre’s production of Fiorello!, Bethany is in the ensemble and is the understudy for Thea. Let’s get to know a little more about her:
Q: Is this your first show at Live Arts, and what other shows have you done with us?
A: I have been in Children of Eden (actor), Dog Sees God (house manager), A Christmas Carol: The Radio Play (stage manager), Rumplestiltskin (assistant director), Stealing Home (actor), and Importance of Being Earnest – Flipped! (house manager).
Q: What attracted you to audition for Fiorello?
A: I saw that this musical was a product of the same people who created Fiddler on the Roof, my all-time favorite musical, and I wanted to be a part of it.
Q: Name two fun facts about you:
- A: I have a form of synesthesia that allows me to sometimes associate colors with numbers and vice versa.
- I’ve been reading since I was two years old and wrote my first short story at the age of three.
Q: What is your dream acting role?
A: Portia in Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice
Q: What musical would you most like to be in?
A: Fiddler on the Roof (Hodel)
Q: What makes Fiorello! different from other shows you have done?
A: This is the first time I’ve been understudy for a lead in a musical and when I perform as Thea, it will be the first time I’ve had a musical solo.
Q: Tell us about your character in Fiorello! and how does that character compare to you.
A: I admire Thea’s courage and strong character. She’s very loyal to the people she cares about and I feel I can certainly identify with that.
Q: Fiorello! is based on a true story of an honest politician taking on a corrupt establishment. How does this resonate with you as you prepare for this show?
A: I do feel slightly intimidated about playing a character who is based off of a real-life person, but also incredibly honored.
