Here are some fun facts to help you get to know the show a little better:

~The current season theme is “Welcome Home”.  The Hot L Baltimore is about a group of people that have made the hotel their home and their struggle when faced with the possibility of losing that home.

~The Hot L Baltimore is being directed by Starshine Stanfield, who also directed, Whistle Down the Wind for Live Arts Theatre in July 2014.

~Picture a hotel marquee with a single letter burned out… Yes. It’s the ‘e’.  The title of the show Hot l Baltimore is taken from the neglected sign.

~“The Hotel Baltimore, built in the late nineteenth century, remodeled during the Art Deco Last stand of the railroads, is a five-story establishment intended to be an elegant and restful haven. Its history has mirrored the rails decline… The Hotel Baltimore is scheduled for demolition.” ~ Lanford Wilson

~The Hot l Baltimore was also a TV sitcom, produced by Norman Lear, that lasted one season. 13 shows were aired from January 24, 1975 through April 25, 1975.  You can enjoy the promo here. It was quite controversial for its time, featuring two prostitutes, an illegal immigrants, and one of the first gay couples on TV. A version was then attempted in France in 1976, also lasting only a single season.

~The Hot l Baltimore won:

  • 1973 Drama Critic’s Circle Award for Best American Play

1973 Obie Award for Best American Play
